Case Study: Roof Inspection – Insurance

Overview

Building repair and construction company, Australia’s Insurance Builders (AIB), needed to inspect the rooftop of a building in Sydney. They wanted to identify the cause of a major blockage in part of the box gutter. In addition, they needed to assess the work required to fix the problem. AIB provide rebuilds, repairs and maintenance for commeercial and heritage buildings.

Current Process

“Traditionally, AIB would inspect the roof using a crane to lift a person in a bucket and position them over the roof,” says Todd. “This method was not only time-consuming, taking up to a week to assemble onsite, but was also high-risk to the employees involved.”

“Then we’d then need to organise scaffolding and safety equipment such as harnessing in the areas that required a closer inspection and possible repairs. “We’d need to develop complex SWMS and safety documentation, and the scaffolds and
harnesses would need to pass stringent WHS restrictions. Not to mention the safety implications on our own team members.”

“Usually quite a lot of scaffolding would be required, as it was hard to clearly identify areas of concern during the initial inspection,” Todd says.

Challenges

The building was difficult to inspect using traditional methods, because of access issues, and parts of the roof weren’t visible from vantage points. Plus, the building owners had strict safety policies.

Outcome

After a quick on-site safety analysis, a drone captured the entire building. The following day a complete 3D digital model was deliveered in Trendpek’s inspection platform.

AIB were able to zoom into areas of concern. They were also ale to identify other damage to wood panelling, vegetation growth in box gutters and failing patch work from previous repairs.

By using Trendspek AIB was able to identify the blockage in under an hour and organise scaffolding in just a small end of the building to repair the guttering.
