What are Digital Twins?

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical asset, system, or environment, generated using data to mirror its real-world counterpart at a point in time.

In our resource paper, we explore the emergence of Asset Twins and how they support engineers, asset owners and contractors to manage infrastructure.

Different types of Digital Twin include:

Component (or Part) Twin — a single component, such as sensor or a motor.

Asset Twin — a complete asset, such as a building or a machine.

Process Twin — an end-to-end workflow, such as a supply chain.

System Twin — multiple assets working together, such as railway network or power grid.

Urban or Infrastructure Twin — a large-scale digital twin, such as an entire city.

Hybrid Twin — multiple types of digital twin, such as airports or smart grids.

Precision Reality Twins for infrastructure and buildings

Asset twins, or Precision Reality Twins (PRTs) are a purpose-built solution in digital twin technology.

These precise digital representations of large and complex assets (such as bridges, buildings, and energy systems) provide stakeholders unprecedented insights into structural integrity and potential vulnerabilities.

When compared to traditional inspection methods, these Precision Reality Twins offer benefits such:

80% more coverage

95% time saving

78% risk reduction

For real-time examples of these outcomes, explore some of our success stories with clients around the world.
