Project overview
Osprey Integrity selected Trendspek’s Precision Asset Intelligence software for contextualisation and data management of drone-captured data, and to optimise situational awareness and user experience for the client.
Following data collection, Osprey's team have built a comprehensive predictive maintenance program to monitor potential risks — leveraging Trendspek’s Templates, Customisable Classification Fields and Advanced Sharing Capabilities for Contractor Enablement.
Courtland Penk, President of Osprey Integrity says:
"Having tried a variety of online asset management and inspection platforms, Osprey chose Trendspek due to its intuitive user-friendly interface, high-fidelity 3D models, powerful inspection suited tools, clean folder management system and best-in-class customer experience support."
Through collective collaboration between Trendspek, Osprey and their client, the program has had a dramatic impact on the early identification of deficiencies ranging from minor to critical, helped streamline prioritisation of repairs, and directly helped prevent surprise maintenance events at the facility.
Teams can conduct virtual site walkthroughs to anticipate resources and access required during turnaround periods, such as crane placements.

"Many of these deficiencies would never have been identified by traditional inspection methods, or at least not without considerable access effort and associated costs. It’s been incredible to see this approach positively influencing a preventative maintenance mindset at the refinery."

Capture Process
Once the facility was digitised within the Trendspek platform, Osprey Integrity created flight missions for target assets like storage tanks, piping circuits, pressure vessels, furnaces and stacks for the client. Resultant flight routes were created to leverage existing automation of the drone technology and future advancements into nested, or ‘drone in the box’ systems. Data was collected at regular intervals, uploaded into the Trendspek platform, and reviewed collaboratively by various stakeholders.
Once reviewed, annotations were created within the model to show precisely where a deficiency was observed, including its classification and criticality.
Recommended repair timeframe, required tradesperson and access requirements were further communicated within the platform annotation and leverage by the client to create maintenance repair work packages for issuance to the appropriate contractors.
Customised Templates to Categorise and Prioritise Risks
Trendspek’s powerful Templating and Folder System enabled Osprey to directly adopt the client's maintenance prioritization tool which considers the likelihood and consequence of failure to dictate repair urgency.
These customised templates are used alongside 3D structural data to guide employees, and contractors alike, on necessary repair actions, from insulation stripping to critical lift planning.
This provides situational awareness not previously possible without considerable administrative burden and field visits.
Cost-Effective, Safer Assessments
To date, over 250 deficiencies have been noted throughout the facility of various classification and urgency, including:
- Insulation deficiencies (minor punctures, open/missing NDE ports, dislodged sheets of clad etc.)
- Steam System Leaks
- Broken/Deformed Mechanical Shutters
- Thermal Anomalies
- Plugged Ventilation Outlets
- Missing Structural Support Hardware
Many of these deficiencies would never have been identified by traditional inspection methods, or at least not without considerable access effort and associated costs.
Interactive Repair Packages
Deficiencies were recorded into the Trendspek platform, categorised by Templated Reporting to consolidate data and to create a consistent, continuous feedback loop between all parties.
This conditional data can be compared over time for active monitoring, setting the foundations for predictive maintenance capabilities.
A few examples include:
- Safety Hazards (e.g. Work at Heights/Sharps/Noise)
- Category (e.g. Insulation/Cladding/Structural/Thermal/Heat and steam)
- Critical Maintenance Priority Tool to indicate likelihood of failure
- Construction Codes and Serial Numbers (e.g. Tanks)
- Access Requirements (e.g. Rope, Abseil, Crane Bucket)
- Repair Works Recommendations (e.g. who needs to work on this, materials required)
With 20/20 hindsight, the client has described the decision to move to this preventative maintenance approach as a ‘No Brainer’ as it is thorough, cost effective, and sets the foundation for predictable maintenance conditions in the future.
“We are able to iterate and re-iterate, and as a result, the maintenance departments are starting to get ahead, asset integrity is more thoroughly informed and safety risks are identified and addressed in a more timely manner.”
