Case Study: Canal Dilapidation Survey

Overview

Leading construction and maintenance company were tasked with the job of completing remedial works for more than 6 kilometres of canal in Sydney’s West. They wanted to complete a full dilapidation survey before commencing remedial works.

Current Process

“To complete this dilapidation survey traditionally, it would have taken several weeks, and would not have produced a full record of the canal’s condition”, says David. Working with a large number of image files saved from a camera was also slow, and difficult to track and organise.

Challenges

The great length of the canal meant it was extremely time-consuming to inspect the canal by physically walking the length of the canal. The condition of more than 62,000 sqm2 of concrete needed to be assessed to determine the scope of works required.

Outcome

Trendspek delivered a comprehensive digital record along with accurate records of the current condition. Within the online platform, the canal could be analysed, annotated, and reports automatically generated.

The team could access the data from out in the field on or in the office. Having access to an organised system of images and annotations, Comdain engineers could properly assess the extent of the canal defects and determine the scope of repairs required.

“This service gave us a full dilapidation survey of the prior condition before we started our remedial works. It allowed us to view areas of the canal up to a couple of km away without having to leave the office to travel there” says David. “The model saved us an immense amount of time and allowed us to access inspection data remotely on-demand”.

David says one of the greatest benefits of using Trendspek for this project has been the online interface for his team to use, which makes it easy to interpret and analyse data over the length of the canal.

“This is the first time I have had to do something like this, and I feel we got it right the first time”.
